          Chapter Leadership Training

2007 Leadership Training - September 22-23, 2007

State College, Pa.

                                                                                 Circle of Life

                                                                                                           by Edward Kesgen

"All human beings share similar hopes, aspirations and dreams.  Striving to understand our commonality, rather than to accentuate our differences, is a major

step in fostering interpersonal harmony."  This was one of several group maintenance axioms explored by state leadership of the American Massage Therapy

Association—Pennsylvania Chapter during an experiential workshop held in State College on September 22, 2007.

Under the guidance of facilitator Dr. Ed Kesgen, the day began with a philosophical overview of important principles necessary for effective communication

and interpersonal validation.  Several lighthearted, high-energy humanizers followed, during which inhibitions were shed and receptivity to the tasks at hand

enhanced. For more information about the training please access this document.

    Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP)

The program is held annually at the National Office, in the suburb of Chicago, which the chapter supports and sends

volunteers every year with a purpose of educating them to better understand their roles and responsibilities. Some of the

participants were new to the organization and  learning  about leadership and how to build a strong team for the current and

future growth of the organization.

CVOP attendees learned about association basics, legal and financial obligations, insurance and AMTA’s Future Directions, discussed

board development, chapter relations basics, financial responsibilities and volunteer development. Last year, there were opportunities for

participants to explore programs and subjects in-depth, according to the needs of their chapters. There was a program fair, which gave

attendees a chance to network with their colleagues. Consultants and AMTA staff were on hand to answer questions on topics such as legal

obligations, insurance, the Council of Schools, the Government Relations Program, AMTA Position Statements and chapter programs.

Representatives of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork,® the AMTA Foundation and the Commission

on Massage Therapy Accreditation were also present. A number of people also said that attending CVOP would help them go back to their

chapters and enhance their ability to serve its members.

"Attending the CVOP has definitely changed my vision and I have received invaluable tools which are helping me currently in becoming an

effective board member."

   Policies & Procedures

One of the responsibilities of the Chapter Board is to establish policies and procedures for the chapter in order to conduct the ongoing day-to-day

business of the Chapter.

Every year the board meets in person to discuss and update the chapter's policies and procedures. The job entails reviewing, revising, rejecting, approving and

adopting policies and procedures necessary for the business of the Chapter. The board takes the information and suggestions about situations or procedures that

need to have a clear policy identified. It keeps the policy and procedure document updated which have been approved by the board.
